The golden dunes of Maspalomas and the elegant sandy curve of Playa de las Canteras are two of the great beaches of Gran Canaria – the former a mini-Sahara of shifting sands, the latter a superb city beach, animated from morning until dawn. The sunny resorts of the southwest have well maintained, safe, artificial beaches; while elsewhere in the island the locals get down to the coast to enjoy the small sandy coves and their lively restaurants.
Playa de las Canteras in Las Palmas is a superb city beach with calm, sheltered waters perfect for sun, swimming and people watching. Put on your snorkel and swim with the fish in the crystalline waters of the capital’s 3-km golden beach. A rocky reef named La Barra (‘The Bar’), keeps the waves back, making this a superb place for families to enjoy swimming.
Further south, the La Barra ends and surfers take advantage of the breaks. If you prefer to stay dry, take a gentle stroll along the promenade and stop for a seafood lunch. Maspalomas Beach is Gran Canaria’s supreme beach.
Families favor the calmer seas near the lighthouse while the section closest to Playa del Inglés is used by nudists. Some consider it the most beautiful of all the beaches of the island. The long stretch of white sand is backed by vast dunes, set against the blue sea. This beach provides all the infrastructure needed to enjoy a fabulous day at Maspalomas.
If you get tired of the beach there is much fun to be found in the nearby surroundings or just a few kilometers north of Maspalomas with attractions such as the Aquasur, Holiday World or the Sioux City. Playa del Inglés is Maspalomas’s closest neighbor is one of the island’s busiest beaches, but it’s large enough for everybody to enjoy its fine golden sand. Located in the largest tourist area of the island it is the biggest holiday complex of the islands.
This fun-and-sun beach offers all sorts of leisure and sports activities such as sailing, jet-ski, windsurfing or water skiing. There’s no lack of bars or sun loungers and the resort is well-served with restaurants and shops. If you’re real water sport fan check out our holiday homes near water in the Canary Islands.
Las Burras is a fine alternative to the busier resort beaches further along the Gran Canaria coast. This beach is for those who don’t mind black sand and need calm waters for their children. At the far end of the beach is the San Agustin commercial center so you will find a lot of restaurants and bars there for a good lunch and afternoon shopping.
Playa de Puerto Rico is bustling and overcrowded during the high season but is still a famous family resort particularly popular with British families. Puerto Rico’s golden sand is imported from the Sahara making it an ideal playground for children. Known to be the sunniest spot of the island, this holiday resort is a true paradise for sun worshippers.
Away from the beach, in a lush tropical garden with exotic plants and flowers you will find two public swimming pools. Puerto Rico is also famous for the many water sports activities on offer ranging from water-skiing, sailing, diving, and windsurfing to leisure excursions such as pleasure boat trips along the coast, dolphin watching boats or a trip in a glass bottom boat to discover the world under the water surface.
Playa de Amadores
Between Puerto Rico and Puerto Mogán lies another glorious man-made beach, Playa de Amadores, which can also be reached on a 20 min walk from Puerto Rico. This extensive bay is well protected from the ocean and boasts almost one kilometer stretch of golden sands and crystal clear waters.
No ball games or radios are allowed but you can read a great book or just listen to the waves of the ocean while tanning. This beach provides excellent conditions for small children but also for the romantic people otherwise it wouldn’t be called ‘the lovers’ beach’.
